  2. The New England Historical and Genealogical Register. (Boston: New England Historic Genealogical Society)
    69:27.

Children of Simon Ray and Mary Rowning: Mary, bp. Hundon, England, 26 Jun 1636, d. 1 Jul 1657, m. 5 Nov 1651, as second wife, Samuel Deering of Braintree.

  3.   "Savage's Genealogical Dictionary, Corrections and Additions", Source:NEHGR, p. 45:312, Samuel's second wife is identified as "Mary Hayward". The justification for this identification cannot be found and it appears to be an error, since the marriage record clearly states Mary Ray, the widow Mary (Rowning) Ray had already remarried Peter George, and this Peter George, and Samuel Deering, and Mary's brother Simon Ray were all proprietors of Block Island indicating close ties.

Note that, in this case, the corrections to Savage appear confused while Savage appears correct. The correction says it is adding information on Samuel Deering to Vol. 2:41. Indeed, on p. 2:41 of the original dictionary, no Samuel of Braintree is listed under "DERING, or DEERING". He is, however, found under "DEARING , or DEERING" on p. 2:33, and in fact, the original Savage entry lists all three wives and correctly identifies the second one as "Mary Ray".
