Mary Ann Moles was baptised on 3rd November 1816 at Willian in Hertfordshire, daughter of Mary Ann Moles, formerly Best, and her husband Thomas Moles, an agricultural labourer.

In 1833, aged 17, Mary married Joseph Pratt. This was the third marriage between the Moles and Pratt families - Mary's brother William had married Joseph's sister Hannah in 1827, and Mary's sister Ann had married Joseph's brother John in 1829. Mary and Joseph's marriage was witnessed by Mary's brother Charles Moles and his future wife Maria Bullen.

After their marriage, Mary and Joseph moved to the nearby market town of Baldock, where they had five children between 1835 and 1844. Mary died in 1846, aged 29, being buried at Baldock on 30th March 1846. Her youngest daughter was only one year old at the time - she was sent to live with Mary's sister Susannah who lived at Offley, a few miles to the west of Baldock. Joseph survived Mary by just under a decade.
