Facts and Events
Place of Birth: Camden, Ohio, now Kipton, Ohio. Daughter Florence was in attendance at her death in Florida. Graduated from town school in Ohio, and taught her first rural school at age 15. Attended Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio for two years. She moved to Nebraska after being convinced by her brothers to come west. She taught in Columbus, Nebraska in 1869, 1870 and 1871 while living with her married brother Warner and his family. Following is information received from the Oberlin College Archives: Mary J. Lawrence was registered in the Preparatory Department of Oberlin College in 1868-70. This department was similar to our modern day high school. In those days, this department had more students than the College Course and most students stayed only a year or two obtaining sufficient education to get a job in teaching or business. We have very little information about Mary Lawrence. She came from Wakeman, Ohio, which is nearby, and she did not contact the college after she left. However, in its efforts to trace alumni, the college made many attempts over the years to contact them and in Mary's case, we had several replies from third parties. In February 1908, Mrs. W. Lawrence in Cleveland, Ohio said Mary's home was in Bellevue, Nebraska. She did not indicate whether Mary was married or not. In September of that year, Emery J. Lee, of Silver Creek, Nebraska, said Mary was now Mrs. C.H. Lee of Silver Creek, Nebraska. In October 1929 Faith Lee Fitch, living in Oberlin's Dascomb Cottage, reported that Mary was a housewife living in Hilliard, Florida and her name was Mrs. Cyrus Homer Lee. In 1931 the college sent a query to Mrs. Lee in Hilliard, and received an unsigned reply back from Colorado in late 1931 which said that Mrs. Lee was born April 1, 1850, that she married in 1872, and died in Hilliard, Florida on October 13, 1931. We are sorry we have so little information to help you. Good luck in your research. Sincerely, Edward G.
