A woman who was said to be very mean to her step-children, Wesley and Walter. Wesley left home at age 12. Walter was hit in the head with a frying pan which caused him to be hard of hearing for the rest of his life. 1910 U.S. Census shows Mary, age 47, living on Emporia St., Haviland, Kiowa Co., KS, with sons Roy, Gomer, and daughter, Bessie. She was widowed in 1908. Obituary in possession of Walter and Lorraine Thorpe indicates Mary died 12/15/1935 at the age of 75 yrs., 10 mos., 23 days. Independence Examiner, Independence, MO, Dec 16, 1935 Funeral service for Mrs. Mary M. Thorpe, 74, a resident of Independence for twelve years will be conducted at 2:30 on Wednesday afternoon from the George C. Carson Funeral Chapel. Burial in Mound Grove Cemetery. Mrs. Thorpe died Sunday at the home of her son, Roy Thorpe, 500 South Forest Ave. The family came here from Liberal, KS. Surviving are three other sons; Gomer Thorpe, 903 Brookside Drive Mount Washington; Wesley Thorpe, Haviland, Ks., and Walter Thorpe, Syracuse, KS.; one daughter, Mrs. Bessie Clark, 5218 Scarritt Ave., Kansas City; four sisters, Mrs. Dora Cain, 2908 Forest Ave., Kansas City, Mrs. Virginia Cadwell, 1602 South Pleasant Street, Mrs. Ethel Bryant, Haviland, KS., and Mrs. Blanche Culp, Los Angeles. |
