Facts and Events
Elizabeth "Betty" Hurley Ayers, age 81 of Westport, the beloved wife of the late Harold E. Ayers, passed away on Sunday, March 1, 2009. She was born in Cheshire, the youngest of five children of John and Delia Madden Hurley. Betty graduated from St. Joseph's College in West Hartford with a Register Nurse's degree in 1948. After studying at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., she settled in Westport in 1950 and remained a Westport resident for more than 50 years. Her entire professional career was devoted to the practice of nursing. She was an O.R. nurse at Norwalk Hospital, a nurse for a physician in private practice and for several decades, she was a Visiting Nurse for the City of Norwalk. On June 24, 1967 Betty was married. She was an active and devoted parishioner of St. Luke's in Westport. In 1957 Betty and her mother hosted the first home visit by the parish's first pastor, Rev. Cornelius Looney. She and Harold were also members of the choir at the church and lay ministers for many years. After her retirement, Betty and her husband were frequent volunteers at several Connecticut historical sites. She is survived by her loving daughter, Kathryn Theresa Ayers and her fiancé, Richard Seaberg; and grandson, Harrison Allan Seaberg all of New Haven; brother, John F. Hurley of Denver; and a large multi-generational extended family. In addition to her husband, Betty was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas M. Hurley and Robert F. Hurley (who died in defense of his country during WWII); and a sister, Helen C. Hurley Pedersen. Friends are invited to attend the funeral on Monday, March 9, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Luke's Church in Westport for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in Assumption Cemetery in Greens Farms. Friends may greet the family on Monday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the SHAUGHNESSEY-BANKS FUNERAL HOME, 50 Reef Rd. in Fairfield. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Camillus Health Center, 434 Elm St., Stamford, CT 06902 or to St. Luke's Church, 49 Turkey Hill Rd.
