Harold E. Ayers, devoted husband and best friend of Mary Elizabeth Hurley Ayers for more than 35 years, died on Wednesday, Feb. 21, in Bridgeport. He was 85. Born in Kent to the late Frank and Alice Pryor Ayers, he was a graduate of the University of Bridgeport and was a veteran in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Bombadier, where he received the Purple Heart. He was a longtime Westport resident.

Prior to his retirement, he was a supervisor of tolls for the State of Connecticut for more than 30 years. Mr. Ayers was involved in the St. Luke's Choir, and the Hoot Owls singing group. He also was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels in Norwalk and Westport with his wife Betty.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his loving daughter, Kathryn Theresa Ayers, and her fianc?e, Rich Seaberg, of New Haven; his cherished grandson, Harrison A. Seaberg; a brother, Russell R. Ayers of Sunnyvale, Calif.; and a sister, Mary Margaret Ayers Rolfe and her husband, John Rolfe, of New Haven. Mr. Ayers was predeceased by his brother, Frank Ayers; his sister, Eleanor F. Ayers Duff; and sister-in-law, Jean Ayers.

held in Assumption Cemetery, Green's Farms. Friends greeted the family on Tuesday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the Shaughnessey-Banks Funeral Home, 50 Reef Road, Fairfield, prior to the service.
