Facts and Events
Mary Fleming was the daughter of John and Jane Fleming, of Derry Township, Lancaster County (present-day Dauphin County), Pennsylvania. She married George Morrow 20 January 1763 by the Presbyterian minister of the Derry congregation.[1]. Mary's children with George included at least Hugh (born shortly after their marriage) and John (born about 1770, who named his daughter Mary Fleming). Her name is usually listed as Mary Calhoun, but that is the name of John's wife, and no primary evidence identifies such a person. Traditionally, George is given two wives, because the will of his wife Mary Morrow in 1819 names only one daughter Margaret and sons George Mecklin and James; and Hugh, John, Jane (all adults) and Mary Ann (a minor) are named only in George's will. However, George's will provided specifically that George M. and James were to split the property on which his wife lived after her death, and granted larger bequests to his older sons and Jane. Moreover, Hugh and John had left the state by 1819, and John was dead. If there were evidence that George and James were much younger, that would also support a second wife, but George gave his age corresponding to a birth between 1774 and 1800 and no clear records of James appear to exist. Finally, although the name "George Mecklin" has led to the assumption that George's second wife was Mary Mecklin, the name also appears among descendants of his brother James, and thus may indicate a relation further back. The 1819 will is included below, but leaving two wives for the time being in light of the ambiguities above and pending further research on the children. [edit] Will Abstract
