Mary Davis was born on 23rd December 1809 and baptised the next day at Great Gaddesden in Hertfordshire, daughter of an agricultural labourer called Samuel Davis and his wife Ann.

On 20th December 1829, a couple of days before her twentieth birthday, Mary married Thomas Dean at Great Gaddesden. They went on to have three children at Great Gaddesden between 1830 and 1835. Each of the children's baptisms record that Thomas was a labourer and the family lived at Gaddesden Row.

Thomas died when he was only 33 years old, being buried at Great Gaddesden on 3rd September 1837.

Fifteen months after Thomas's death, Mary had another daughter called Caroline at Great Gaddesden. Caroline's baptism record does not name her father.

The 1841 census finds three of Mary's children being looked after by her relatives in Great Gaddesden: Joseph and Caroline were being living with Mary's parents and Eliza was living next door with Mary's brother Adam. Mary however was working as a servant at Flamsteadbury Farm in Flamstead, a couple of miles east of Gaddesden Row.

Mary died when she was only 31 years old. She was buried at Great Gaddesden on 11th December 1841.

Dec[embe]r 24 Mary Daughter of Samuel and Ann Davis born Dec[embe]r 23d

This baptism has been linked to the Mary Davis who married Thomas Dean in 1829 on the basis that Mary and Thomas's son Joseph was living with Mary's parents in the 1841 census - presumably staying with his grandparents after his father's death.
