Joseph Dean was born on 13th December 1832 and baptised a month later at Great Gaddesden in Hertfordshire. He was the son of Mary Dean, formerly Davis, and her husband Thomas Dean, a labourer. The family lived at Gaddesden Row to the east of the parish.
