Mary Dougherty, a daughter of John and Isabella Daugherty married William Charles in Harrison County, Indiana October 19,1811. William was the son of Joel Charles, who, with his family and several rangers, lived in the French Lick Fort in Orange County, Indiana. The Charles family came to Indiana from South Carolina in 1811. 4. In the spring of 1813, Indians attacked the Fort and William Charles was killed. Mary Daugherty Charles was on guard at the time of the ambush. After her husban's death, she wore the hat her husband was wearing at the time of the killing. The hat had three holes made from the blows of the Indian's tomahawk. Mary died in 1816, they say from grief over the loss of her husband. She and William are both buried near Old French Lick Fort.
