Mary Elizabeth Craig was a sister to Charles C. Craig. She is married and is noted to be illiterate according to the Census of 1860. In the Census of 1870, she is listed as keeping house for Christopher Powell, and her husband is not mentioned. She was a widow by 1880, and was living with her brother at that time. Christopher Powell, aged 75, was also living in the Craig home, and employed as a domestic farm laborer. It is possible that John, her husband, moved west with his parents, and she chose to stay behind.
