Marvin enlisted in his father's unit, the 53rd Regiment, Illinois Volunteers, on Dec 9, 1861 at Ottawa, Lake Co., Illinois. He was discharged on Apr 22, 1862 due to "incurable hernial rupture". He then enlisted in the 14th Regiment, New York Heavey Artillery on Dec 8, 1863 anddischarged Sep 22, 1864.
