Born in Wayne Co., OH per his Civil War pension file. Married to Martha Scott on 21 June, 1849. Died 10 March, 1881 per tombstone and Civil War Pension Record. Buried in Northwood Cemetery, McArthur Township, Logan Co., OH.

Per Civil War compiled military history from NARA: born Wayne Co., OH and when mustered in on Aug. 25, 1864 was 38 yrs. old; gray eyes, brown hair, dark complexion and 5'8" tall. Papers said he was "discharged on surgeons certificate of disability existing previous to enlistment, heart disease, never done any duty as soldier".

1880 census - listed under Matthew Johnston, living with Lemuel Shaul family; sons James R. and John K. are living with Martin and Martha.
