from Gerard Harvey <[email protected]> books by Edward MacLysaght who was the main academic authority on Irish surnames. Irish surnames came into being from about 900 AD, one of the first countries to adopt surnames. Before that, there were clan names. As far as I know, when a man or woman married into a clan, they took the clan name.(O) Halpeny, Halfpenny O hAilpine (alp, lump). This is basically the same as Halpin, but each has a definite location: Halpeny mainly Co. Monaghan and Halpin mainly Co. Limerick. MIF

"In 1803, the British Parliament enacted legislation to regulate vessels carrying emigrants to North America. The master of the vessel was required to prepare a list of passengers. Unfortunately, few such lists have survived and therefore, there are no comprehensive nominal lists of immigrants arriving in Canada before 1865."

from Martin Dunn: 11-2007 received a card from Fr. Pat Halfpenny yesterday. He says that he has a prayer book that belonged to Martin Halfpenny from Co Louth (Hunterstown townland) in the Ardee parish. This is the father of John and Martin. I am relooking the list I sent to you on the folks who lived in the Blakestown and Hunterstown townlands.

from Martin dunn: Are you aware of the Irish naming formula. The first son named after the paternal grandfather, second son named after the maternal grandfather. The first daughter named after the maternal grandmother, second daughter named after the paternal grandmother. <if martin and alice followed this tradition, Martin's father was probably John and his mother Anne>

name Halpenny's derivation means alp or stout little man

possible arrval in Canada: http://personal.nbnet.nb.ca/rmcusack/Story-01.html It resulted in each Irish village that sent people to Saint John in the early 1800s having a specific neighbourhood, or a certain city block or even a particular tenement building where its people went, said Jane Fullerton, associate director of the New Brunswick Museum. The city's South End was the new homeland for families from County Louth, while York Point was the domain of Cork natives and their descendants. Several families from County Kerry clustered at Fort Howe. Prince Edward Street and Brussel Street area was associated in the same way with Tyrone and Donegal, Mr. Murphy said. Chain migration from County Louth is a feature of the New Brunswick Museum's Out of Ireland exhibit which will run at Market Square until the end of September. Mr. Murphy, as guest curator, was responsible for assembling the show. The exhibit focuses mostly on the Irish who arrived here before 1847 immigration peak of the Great Famine.
