Captain Martin Davenport supported the cause of the American Revolution and served in the North Carolina Militia. He received payment for sundries furnished to the Militias of North and South Carolina, and Virginia. He served on the Catawba frontier. He was well liked, trusted and valued as being a fast courier who knew ways to get through. He was knowledgeable about the area, his tours of duty being in the John's and Yadkin River Valleys, and was a respected scout and guide. He served under both Colonel Benjamin Cleveland and Major Joseph McDowell. He was apparently badly wounded in one of the skirmishes, but later recovered. It is not known whether he was present at the Battle of Kings Mountain, but he was active in the war against the British. By 1790 he moved his family to an area west of the Blue Ridge on the Toe River. He was a scout, surveyor, hunter and guide.
