Facts and Events
Nan Johnson writes: Closest in age to my grandfather, Martha was a favorite aunt of my mother, Ruthanne Heimstra. My mother recalls taking the train from Rochester every summer to visit her cousins, Dick and Betty, on the farm in Rock Valley. When it was time to leave, Ruthanne and her sister were always sad and tearful. Aunt Martha packed a treat for them, which they were not allowed to open until the train conductor announced the next stop, which was Perkin's Corners. It became a tradition in my family to send visitors off with a "Perkin's Corners" package, a small treat to eat on their way home. Martha married John Van Eldik |
