Biography

Martha Clare, daughter of Peter Curtis Clare and Caroline Amelia Martin, was born on 29 June 1854 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Martha was christened in September 1854 in Philadelphia. She appeared on the census of 1860 in the household of her parents in the East Division of Ward 3 in Philadelphia. Martha's father, Peter Curtis Clare, died on 3 July 1868 in Philadelphia. Martha became the step-daughter of Lorenzo Ackley in 1870 when her mother remarried. Martha Clare appeared on the census of 1870 in the household of her mother and stepfather, Alonzo Ackley, in the district 6, ward 2, Philadelphia.

Martha Clare married William Henry Smith, son of Charles F. Smith and Rebecca Beason, on 26 August 1870 in Philadelphia. William and Martha's marriage was apparently troubled, as William sometimes went live with relatives down at 'the Neck' in South Philadelphia when he was arguing with his wife. The 1880 census showed Martha and William living on Whisner Street in Philadelphia with their children Mary and Carrie.

Martha and William appeared on the census of 1900 with their children William, George and Martha at 1220 Mercy Street, Philadelphia. Martha was a servant who did housework out in 1910. She appeared on the census of 1910 with her son George in the household of her daughter, Martha (Smith) Daniels, at 2416 South Clarion Street, Philadelphia. Martha Smith appeared on the census of 1920 in the household of her brother, Peter Boyer Clare, at 2424 Clarion Street, Philadelphia. In 1926, Martha lived at 1423 Jackson Street, Philadelphia. Martha's husband, William Henry Smith, died on 11 February 1926 Stone House Lane, Philadelphia.

Martha Smith died on 18 June 1934 at the home of her daughter Martha at 2220 South Woodstock Street, at age 79 of arterioscherosis and diabetes mellitus, with contributory senile psychosis. She was buried on 22 June 1934 Mt. Moriah Cemetery, Philadelphia.
