Bio notes: Altoona Mirror, Sat., March 22, 2003 Mrs. M. Elizabeth "Lizzie" Green, 95, 708 Locust St., Roaring Spring, died Thursday, March 20, 2003, at The Village at Morrisons Cove, Martinsburg. She was born Nov. 15, 1907, in McKee, a daughter of Ross and Myrtle (Fagans) Burket. She married Russell E. Green Sept. 12, 1925, in Cumberland, Md. He died Nov. 23, 1992. Mrs. Green was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Roaring Spring, the Everready Bible Class and the Questors Sunday school class. She always was active in church programs as a teacher, leader, children's programs, ways and means committees and the administrative board. She was a 1925 graduate of Roaring Spring Highs School. She was past worthy matron of Roaring Spring Chapter 121 of Order of Eastern Star, past sate assistant president of the Patriotic Order of Americans, served as the first secretary of the Central High School Band Parents Organization, was past president of the Murray-Appleman American Legion Auxiliary and member of the Roaring Spring Women's Club. She formerly was active in the Freedom Township Elementary School and was one of the organizers of its cafeteria program during the 1930s. She loved and cared for her garden and flowers every day. She also enjoyed quilting, and at age 92, she pieced together five quilt tops and finished five tops. She was active with Trinity United Methodist Church and First Church of the Brethren quilting groups. Her grandchildren were her most important people, and she followed all their activities until her recent illness. She loved sports with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers her favorite, along with college basketball. Her home always was open to everyone who knew her. She was a devoted daughter, understanding wife, wonderful mother and mother-in-law, a proud grandmother, a caring sister and sister-in-law, a loving aunt, a good neighbor and had a generous heart. We have been blessed by her presence in our lives. Surviving are three daughters: Vivian Morgart of Bradenton, Fla., Annetta Guyer of Newfield, N. Y., and Linda Latchaw of Greenville, S. C.; and a son, John R. Green of Roaring Spring. A son, William, was killed in action in Korea Sept. 9, 1952. Also survived by 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. A granddaughter, Jennifer Guyer DiVico, died in 1988. She also is survived by four sisters and three brothers: Rebecca Bowers, June Elliott, Ross Jr. and Russell, all of Roaring Spring, Cleo Johnson of Martinsburg, Mary Thompson of Duncansville and Carl of Bakers Summit. Friends will be received from 6 to 9 p.m. today, March 22, at J. Gary Thompson Funeral Home, Roaring Spring, where an Eastern Star service will be held at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Trinity United Methodist Church, Roaring Spring, by Pastor Charles Baughman. Interment at Greenlawn Cemetery, Roaring Spring. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Trinity United Methodist Church. |
