The family recollection was somewhat confusing regarding addoption in this branch of the family. Some said she was adopted by William Barker and Emily Smith, others indicated the adoption could have been in an earlier generation.

She probably came to Middletown around 1910, just before the birth of Earl. Earl and others said that she was "part Cherokee".

The family story was that Floyd, Sherman and Benjamin were full siblings and Arliss, Cordelia and Ida were half.
