Earl was generally a quiet person. He worked shifts at the steel mill and often slept during the day. He seemed to enjoy working in his yard and garden. He was very active in church. He was a licensed lay speaker and taught Sunday school for a number of years. In his younger years he played soft ball and liked pitching horseshoes. In later years, other than church activities, it suited him to stay at home. He did seem to delight in his grandchildren and he was very proud of his sons.
