Martha Jane Barber Queen Born Feb 27, 1832. Died Mar 22, 1910

Martha Jane, wife of Elias Butler claimed to be decended from royality. Her father was Col. Barber. She was born in Indianna. Martha Jame is reported to have had 23 black taffita dresses, and wore one each day. She sat in a straight posture with "aires" of royality, ad gave instructions to her black slaves. One of these slaves took the name Scott Queen, and later settled in Georgetown. The Queens lived in a two story rock house on Queen Hill.

The Queens were known for traiding horses. At one time there were over 1,000 mares on the Queen ranch. Horses were brought from Mexice, "broken" at the Queen ranch, and later sold.

Both Elias Butler Sr. and Martha Jane are buried at the Queen Hill Cemetery. Queen Hill is a distinct elevation above the surrounding land. It sits on County Road 126 near Weir, TX. The cemetery is located about 200 yards from the road on the north side. When last visited by this author, it was in disrepair. Several tombstones were fallen and broken. However the monument for Elias and Martha remained standing. The entire cemetery was overgrown with vines, underbrush, cedars, and live oak trees. It was littered with broken stones and barbed wire from old fencing. The cemetery sits on private property and visitors need to acquire permission from the property owner, before entering the property.

Elias and Martha were members of the Methodist church in Georgetown, and their pictures hang in the Williamson County courthouse in that city.
