According to the recollections of Laura Jane Ashton Vail: Martha was the youngest in the family of children [Zechariah Ashton & Mary Elizabeth Eveland], and when her mother died, Ambrose took her to his home and she remained with them until the time of her death. She never married. Martha was five years old when Father married his last wife, my Mother [Zechariah Ashton married the widow, Eliza Ann Dobson Lathan, on 21 Mar 1856].
