Recollections from Half Sister, Laura Jane Ashton Vail
"[Samuel] Edwin served in the war of 1861-1865, came [home] sick both in body and mind and had to go to Dayton to the hospital. In later years he regained his health and was transferred to the hospital at Toledo, Ohio. He liked it so well at the hospital that he wished to remain and did so until the time of his death. He never married."
