Marion K. Mortensen, 88, passed away in Jerome, Idaho on April 25, 2003. Marion was the son of Peter Mortensen and Mary Catherine Anderson. He was born in Deming, New Mexico, February 12, 1915. He is survived by his loving wife Cleah Brown Mortensen, his 7 children, M. Kay Mortensen (Beverly) of Sandy, Utah, Richard L. Mortensen (Gloria) of Chandler Arizona, Sherrill Meisner of Phoenix, Arizona, Deborah Thompson (Gary) of Rupert, Idaho, Dorothy Reidhead (Rick) of Show Low, Arizona, Karin Frodin (Bill) of Jerome, Idaho, Sharin Nye of Phoenix, Arizona and their families. He has 26 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and 13 brothers and sisters. Marion was a longtime resident of Virden, New Mexico. He attended grade school and high school there and Eastern Arizona Junior College in Thatcher, Arizona. He returned to farm and ranch until his retirement in 1974. Marion was well known for his singing and musical ability. He was a member of the Royal Knights band through college and formed a band of his own as a hobby with brothers and sisters for most of his life. He was called upon to sing at many funerals, weddings and other events in the area. He married Cleah (Peggy) Brown on December 7, 1939, in the Mesa Arizona Temple. He was active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, served a mission with his wife in the Eastern States Mission, served in many church callings including Stake Patriarch in the Blythe, California Stake and the Mesa South Stake in Mesa Arizona. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America and was the recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. There will be a viewing at the Bunker Mortuary, 33 North Centennial, Mesa, Arizona, Thursday, May 1, 2003, from 6:00-8:00 P.M. and 1 hour prior to the funeral. The funeral will be held on Friday, May 2, 2003, at the LDS Stake Center at 1415 East Southern, Mesa, Arizona at 2:00 P.M. A graveside service will be held at the Virden Cemetery in Virden, New Mexico on Saturday, May 3, 2002 at 11:00 A.M. (Arizona time). Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Farnsworth Mortuary in Jerome, Idaho and the Bunker Mortuary in Mesa and Safford Arizona. Published in the Arizona Republic on 4/30/2003.
