According to the 1900 census she was the step-daughter of Fred Engelking. Probably she was adopted from a prior marriage of Sophie (Hockemeyer) Engelking in Germany. Sophie immigrated to the United States in 1894. After Sophie married Fred Engelking in 1895 she returned to Germany and then re-entered the United States with Marie in 1897.
