Marie Thérèse Bouhaye said that she was born around 1826 at Seraing in the province of Liège, then in the United Kingdom of the Netherlands, and that her father was a mechanic called Lambert Bouhaye. She appears to have been known by her middle name - the 'Marie' is absent from her marriage certificate and most of the censuses. When Thérèse was still a small girl the Belgian Revolution led to the province of Liège and several others breaking away from the Netherlands to become the newly-formed country of Belgium. Records from both Belgium and The Netherlands show that there were a few people born around the 1820s who claimed to be the children of a Lambert Bouhaye and Marie Hélène Deprez of Seraing, who were presumably Thérèse's siblings.
Thérèse's first confirmed sighting however is not in Belgium, but in England. On 23rd May 1854 she married a butler named John Hammond at Felpham in Sussex.
In about 1854, Thérèse had a son named John Lambert Hammond, who was born in Belgium. Whether John was born, then they moved to England and she married, or whether she married, returned to Belgium, had the baby and then returned to England is unclear. John was followed in 1856 by a son named George, born at Felpham.
The 1861 census finds Thérèse working as a lady's maid at the household of a clergyman named George Luxford, presumably attending to his wife Ann. George Luxford had presided at Thérèse and John's marriage. John was the butler for the Luxfords. Thérèse and John's two sons were not living with them at the Luxford's house. They were being looked after in the village by a couple called William and Ann Prior.
Some time between 1861 and 1864 the Luxfords left Felpham and moved to Salehurst, sixty miles away at the other end of Sussex. Thérèse and John went with them. In 1864 they had a daughter named Thérèse Hubertine Hammond, born at Salehurst. The 1871 census finds Thérèse and John and their daughter living at Higham House in Salehurst, the home of the Luxfords. By this time, Thérèse was working as the housekeeper.
Between 1871 and 1881, Thérèse and John left the Luxford's service and moved to Hove on the Sussex coast, where they set up a lodging house at 53 Brunswick Road. They now took on their own domestic servant, Elizabeth (Bessie) Kitchenham, who would stay with the family for many years. The 1881 and 1891 censuses both find Thérèse and John, their daughter and their servant Bessie living at 53 Brunswick Road.
John died later in 1891, aged 67. Thérèse and her daughter continued to live at 53 Brunswick Road. The 1901 census finds Thérèse and her daughter and their servant Bessie living there, along with Thérèse's eldest son John, who was working as a commercial clerk.
Thérèse died on 13th December 1909, aged 82.
