George Hammond was born on 13th April 1856 at Felpham in Sussex, son of a lady's maid called Marie Thérèse Hammond, formerly Boutray, and her husband John Hammond, a butler. They both worked at the home of a local clergyman in Felpham. The 1861 census finds George and his elder brother John both lodging in the village with a couple called William and Ann Prior, whilst their parents were both living elsewhere in Felpham with their employer. George has yet to be researched after 1861.
