Maria Mooney was born on 5th July 1853 in Dublin, daughter of Frances Mooney, formerly Marshall, and her husband James Mooney. She was baptised at St Mary's Pro-Cathedral in Dublin on 9th September.
On 4th February 1883, aged 29, Maria married Denis Cleary, a blacksmith from Monasterevin in County Kildare. Sadly he died just a few months later, on 18th August 1883. Maria was pregnant when Denis died; she gave birth to a son on 27th December 1883, whom she named Denis after the father he never met.
The 1901 census finds Maria living with her son, mother and brothers at 5 Rutland Place North in Dublin. Maria died there on 16th May 1907, aged 53. Her estate was administered by her son Denis, who by that time was working as a butcher.
