Denis Cleary was baptised on 3rd December 1848 at Monasterevin in County Kildare, son of a blacksmith named Maurice Cleary and his wife Alice (known as Ally) Dunne. He was the second of the couple's six children.

On 4th February 1883, aged 34, Denis was married at the Pro-Cathedral in Dublin to Maria Mooney. At the time of their marriage both were living at her parents' house, 3 Rutland Place, in the northern suburbs of Dublin. Denis was described as a blacksmith on their marriage certificate.

Sadly Denis died just a few months after marrying Maria, on 18th August 1883 at the Mater Misericordiae Hospital in Dublin. He was 34 years old. Maria was pregnant at the time of his death; she gave birth to a son whom she named Denis on 27th December 1883 at 6 Rutland Place.

By the time of the 1901 census, Denis's widow and son were still living on Rutland Place.
