Biography: Maria Redman Monroe. We want to remember our great aunt, one of Vera's sisters Maria Redman Monroe who we called simply Vi. Probably named after her uncle Samuel Redman, I remember her as being rather timid when she was amongst us for Holidays and Christmas. She would say, You can just hang me on a nail in the wall when speaking of her exigencies as to the accommodations. I believe she must have done some theater for she would often take off in long discourse to the example Thank you Sir, she said as he drove off. In her younger days she was a kindergarten teacher in Georgia in the 20's and in North Carolina in the 30's. An early fan of Perry Mason (or Raymond Burr I don't know) on the boob tube, she wore glasses with a black cache in front of one of her eyes. I don't know how she had lost that eye. In my younger years she lived as a roomer near Chevy Chase. If she saw some skin on our midriffs she would say I see a discrepancy or when we would bend over,"I see a good place to spank".To say Ok she would always add O Keith. She would buy her groceries at Hume's grocery. One of her favorites were Zweiback biscuits and Clove chewing gum. She smoked Kool menthol cigarettes. When she had eaten enough she would say "I have had an elegant sufficiency". Her latter days were spent in a nursing home on the Newtown pike, Lexington Kentucky. She complained about what she called the "do gooders": the benevolent who made the rounds at the various nursing homes during the holidays giving gifts such as Santas made from baby food jars with pointed red felt caps filled with candy . I think Dad said she had been an elementary school teacher. She was buried at the Old Columbus Confederate Cemetery, Columbus Kentucky. Babo
