Margaret Ellen Walsh was born in 1865 to John Walsh and his wife Catherine (Long) Walsh. They lived in Ireland, probably in the County of Limerick, which is where her father's brother resided. She married Patrick J. Shaughnessy and they had at least two children, John Patrick Shaughnessy, born in 1886, and Alfred James Shaughnessy, born in 1897. She immigrated to the United States sometime before 1906 and settled in Detroit, Michigan, where she hosted her younger cousin John Walsh when he arrived in 1906. She also probably hosted his sisters when they came over. Margaret died in 1940.

   The information about hosting her cousin John Walsh when he came to America came from one of John's daughters, who remembers visiting the Shaughnessy home in Detroit as a child.
