Late Mrs. John Ebbott Mrs John Ebbott was born in Cornwall some fifty-eight years ago, and emigrate d to Victoria while yet a girl, and became identified with our Sabbath-school an d church in California Gully, and remained connected with it until her marriage with Mr. DJ. Ebbott some thirty-eight years ago. That marriage took place in the Forest-street church, and was celebrated by the Rev. NW. Hill, in the presence of the entire district meeting, then in session in Bendigo. It proved a very happy one. A numerous family of sons and daughter, the fruit of that union, a re settled in various parts of the land as useful and honoured members of our church. Mrs Ebbott's manner of life has been worthy of all praise. Amid the cares of rearing a large family, she ever maintained a bright and cheerful spirit, which was reflected in a happy household, where love reigned, and mutual helpfulness was specially prominent. Her husband praised her, and her children rise up to call her blessed. In the truest sense she was "the succourer of many." Many in distress found her a friend in need, and a friend indeed." The cause of God was clear to her, and sympathy with those of her own household that sought to serve God in varied ways could always be relied upon. Her family was ever encouraged in the ways of righteousness, and service for the welfare of others. She took her full share in woman's work in the church, and was a pleasant cheerful companion to those who laboured with her. She will be missed in many ways by her comrades in the work of the Lord. The secret of this radiant and useful life was early decision for God, and a consistent carrying out of the duties of the Christian life. Her piety was of a quiet, dependable kind, unmarked by great emotionalism, nevertheless, very real and constant. This made dying testimonies quite unnecessary. It was the testimony of the life that told the reality and power of her religion. The end came on December 28th, quite suddenly, unexpectedly, while visiting a beloved son; yet, the "home call" was mercifully marked by the absence of linger pain, or distressful struggles. In her husband' s presence, with loving hands to minister to the sudden call, and loving voice s to whisper messages of tenderness, she passed into the presence of the King. The remains were brought to Chewton for interment, and a large concourse of sor rowing friends gathered to show respect for the deceased lady. On Sunday, January 6th, the Rev. J. Nicholson conducted a memorial service in the chuch that ha d been served so well be the departed. An appropriate discourse was preached, and suitable music rendered by the choir. Mr. Ebbott and family have received very marked tokens of sympathy from a large circle of friends. Reference number: NPEB0004

Profound regret was expressed yesterday when it became known that Mrs Ebbott, wife of Mr. J.Ebbott, J.P., manager of the Forest Creek Reefs Mine at Chewton, had died somewhat suddenly at Wangaratta. The deceased lady left Chewton ;on Thursday morning on a holiday visit to Wangaratta, where her son is in business. She was 64 years of age and leaves a husband and grown up family. Latterly she had not been in best of health, but her sudden demise was not expected. Deep sympathy is felt for Mr. Ebbott and family in their sad bereavement, the deceased being very popular and highly respected by all classes of teh community. The remains will be brought to Chewton this morning and will be interred this afternoon.
