Margaret Snelling was born on 27th May 1834 and baptised just under three months later at Crawley in Sussex. She was the daughter of Mary Snelling, formerly Sayers, and her husband James Snelling, a carpenter. Margaret was the fifth of their seven children, although one of her older siblings had died as a baby before Margaret was born. In 1840 Margaret's mother died, shortly after giving birth. Margaret was only five years old when her mother died.

The 1841 census finds Margaret living with her father and siblings at Cross Keys Cottages in Crawley. Margaret's father married a widow called Maria Dancy (formerly Thompson) in 1844, who thus became Margaret's stepmother. Margaret had one half-brother from her father's second marriage, born in 1845.

Sometime between 1845 and 1851, the family left Crawley and moved over sixty miles west to Southampton. Margaret has not been found in the 1851 census, but her father, stepmother and some of her siblings were living at 14 Princes Street in Southampton.

Margaret's next sighting is on 27th October 1857, aged 23, when she married William Love at St Mary's church in Southampton. They went on to have three children in Southampton between 1858 and 1864. The 1861, 1871 and 1881 censuses each find them living at 11 Houndwell Gardens in Southampton. William worked as a painter, at different times being described as a house painter and a ship painter.

Margaret's father died in 1870.

Sometime between 1881 and 1891 William and Margaret left Houndwell Gardens and moved to a recently built terraced house with a garden at 88 Milton Road in the Fitzhugh area to the north of the town. This area was just outside Southampton's borough boundaries at the time, forming part of the Shirley Urban Sanitary District, but it was absorbed into Southampton in 1895. By 1901 William and Margaret had moved around the corner to 55 Cromwell Road.

William died in 1911, aged 79. Shortly afterwards, the 1911 census finds Margaret lodging at 6 Holt Road, also in the Fitzhugh area of Southampton. Margaret only survived William by a few months, dying later in 1911, aged 77.
