William Love was baptised on 4th March 1832 in the parish of All Saints in the town of Southampton. He was the son of Lydia Love, formerly Wilks, and her husband James Love. In 1839 William's father died. The follow year his mother married a mariner called Joseph Bellows, who thus became William's stepfather.
The 1841 census finds William living at Houndwell Gardens in Southampton with his mother. Houndwell Gardens was a narrow street of small houses on the eastern edge of the town centre, running from East Street up to the open spaces of Houndwell Park and Hoglands Park. They were still living at 12 Houndwell Gardens in 1851, when William was described as an apprentice.
On 27th October 1857, aged 25, William married Margaret Snelling at St Mary's church in Southampton. They went on to have three children in Southampton between 1858 and 1864. The 1861, 1871 and 1881 censuses each find them living at 11 Houndwell Gardens in Southampton. In 1861 and 1871 William's mother was still living next door at 12 Houndwell Gardens. William worked as a painter, at different times being described as a house painter and a ship painter.
Sometime between 1881 and 1891 William and Margaret left Houndwell Gardens, where William had lived since childhood, and moved to a recently built terraced house with a garden at 88 Milton Road in the Fitzhugh area to the north of the town. This area was just outside Southampton's borough boundaries at the time, forming part of the Shirley Urban Sanitary District, but it was absorbed into Southampton in 1895. By 1901 William and Margaret had moved around the corner to 55 Cromwell Road.
William died in 1911, aged 79. Margaret survived him by a few months, dying later that same year.
