Although his name here and on his death and burial records is given as Edward rather than Edwin, no evidence has been found prior to 1881 to show that there was an Edward Snelling from Crawley of around this age. As no records giving the name of Edwin Snelling after 1871 have been found, the coincidence of the birthplace, occupation, town of residence, marital status and the similarity of the names suggest that this Edward in 1881 is in fact Edwin.
