Margaret lived in Scotland. She fled to Tyrone County, Ireland in September 1746 and lived there for 20 years. She later immigrated with her family to the American Colonies in about 1767.

By the 1780's the entire Duff family started to migrate to Abingdon, Washington County, Virginia.
