    Margaret "Peggy" McCarthy was b. Hampshire County, Virginia about 1751, d. Shelby County, Kentucky, about 1825, is buried in the Chenoweth family cemetery near present day Middletown.
    She m. Richard Chenoweth about 1769.
    The family came to the Falls of the Ohio [Louisville, Kentucky] in 1778 with Maj. Gen. George Rogers Clark, settled on a tract of land about two miles from present-day Middletown. On 17 July 1789 their home was attacked by a party of sixteen Shawnee. Peggy was shot between the shoulder blades with and arrow and scalped. She recovered and bore two more daughters before her husband died in 1802, but always wore a skullcap.
