Marcus C. Low, Sr., 89, Friendship Manor, Rock Island, died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at Rosewood Care Center, Moline. Arrangements are pending at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport, IA. Obituary in Quad City Times newsopaper, Davenport, IA: Marcus C. Low Sr. 12/29/2002 DAVENPORT -- Celebration of Life Services for Marcus (Mark) Low, Rock Island, formerly of Davenport, will be 11 a.m. Monday at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. Private burial will be at Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mr. Low died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at Rosewood Care Center, Moline. He was born Jan. 29, 1913, in Chicago, to Dean R. and Noretta (Mix) Low. He married Mary Phillips on June 8, 1935, in Chicago. She died April 18, 1997. Mark came to the Quint-Cities in 1953 after resigning from Phillips Petroleum Co., Bartlesville, Okla., as national accounts sales manager. He founded Quint Cities Petroleum Co. and Illowa Enterprises Co., Moline. He also founded the Mississippi Valley Oil Men's Club and served as its first president. He served as chairman of the Special Gifts Committee in raising three million dollars to build the Scott County Family Y and served as its second president. He was also past president of the Davenport Quarterback Club. He was instrumental in developing the Lindsay Park Yacht Harbor and served as a director. He was a past director of the American Red Cross, American Cancer Society, Friendly House, Chamber of Commerce, Davenport Rotary Club, one of the founders of Security State Trust and Savings Bank and on the Board of Trustees for United Community Services. He served five years as president of Sundial Condominiums, Sanibel Island, Fla. Politically, he served as chairman of a Fred Schwengle Campaign. He was nominated by Senator Dole to President Reagan's Republican Senatorial Inner Circle. He was a fine athlete, chosen all-city and all-state basketball player in high school in Chicago. He was offered a scholarship at Northwestern University, played semi-pro basketball and was recruited by Phillips 66 Oilers. He took up golf and won the city of Des Moines Country Club Championship for two years. He played the Velie Cup for Rock Island Arsenal and shot a 67. He started a hole-in-one club among the members and secured the first one. During his lifetime, he scored five hole-in-one's and one double eagle. Memorial gifts may be provided to the Alzheimer's Association, American Cancer Society or Scott County Family Y. Survivors include his three sons and daughters-in-law, Marcus C. Low, Jr. and Barbara, Milwaukee, Wis., Frank P. Low and Tamara, Bettendorf, and James R. Low and Susan, Davenport; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and a special friend, Carlene Dilley.
