OBITUARY: "The Mason County Journal" of Friday, July 8, 1921 Shelton, Mason County, Washington DIES SUDDENLY AFTER BUSY DAY AT O. E. S. PICNIC Death of Marcus F. Knight Comes as a Shock to Community-Hold Masonic Funeral This week adds two to the record of those older residents of Shelton who have been called upon to respond to sudden summons. The second call found its mark in Marcus F. Knight, a well known citizen prominent in official circles and public life in the community for more than thirty years. Death came as a shock to all, but especially to fraternal friends among whom he was spending his most enjoyable day at the Eastern Star picnic at Walker Park. Returning Monday evening Mr. Knight complained of not feeling well and was sent to his hotel in an auto. Reaching there he walked in and prepared for bed, and soon after was found in distress and help summoned. He had passed away before medical aid came and the trouble was given as acute indigestion. Large Fraternal Gathering The funeral was held from the Masonic hall on Wednesday, the most impressive rites of ritual and song being attended by the largest fraternal gathering in years as well as by family friends and public generally, called to pay their last respects to a citizen who had died literally in the harness. Interment was made in the Masonic cemetery, where the final service was given and the grave banked high with flowers. Marcus F. Knight was born in Hamllin, Michigan, November 12, 1852, and was in his 69th year. He was married in 1876 to Mary Dunbar and in 1882 they moved to Huron, South Dakota with their two daughters. After eight years spent there the family followed other Dunbar families to Shelton and this has since been their home, save for short periods of teaching elsewhere, both Mr. and Mrs. Knight and their daughters later being teachers. Served Public Long For more than twenty years the deceased has served the people in some capacity, beginning with county treasurer and ending with his position as acting clerk of the court during the present trials, although his official position was deputy assessor. He was also secretary of Mt. Moriah Lodge, the Fruit Growers Association, the County Fair, Pomona Grange and Patron of Welcome Chapter, O. E. S., all of which kept him busy and active in spite of his years. The passing of Marcus Knight will leave a gap in all these works and in each circle he will be missed as well as among his host of friends over the county and state. Besides his sorrowing widow he leaves two daughters, Miss Jessie Knight, postmaster at Shelton, and Miss Gyneth Knight, who is in the consular service at Shanghai, China. Among the relatives who were called by the occasion were Mr. and Mrs. Will Dunbar, of Port Orchard, Mr. and Mrs. Prentice Dunbar of Olympia, Among the attendants from other places were Masonic brethren from the lodges at Union City, Elma and Olympia. |
