Manila was a young girl during the Civil War and often carried dispatches for the Army because they didn't stop children and search them. Several times she went right past the enemy with dispatches fastened to the inside of her dress. Whenever they saw the enemy approaching, they would hide their guns in the wells, because that was one place that wasn't searched. Mildred Ringengerg Janes said her Grandmother told her this.
