Mattie Dumas was a successful farmers and pioneered and developed the tomato industry in the Bullard area. He stressed high quality scientific fertilization, disease and insect control and soon East Texas proved the tomato as a main crop. He was a strong advocate of the "pink tomato" and stated that should remain on the vine before it was harvested. When the method of harvesting was changed from "pink deal" to the "green wrap', this destroyed the tomato industry in East Texas. After the collapse of the tomato industry he became a cattleman and continued this occupation until his death in 1950. Mamie died in 1963 - both were buried on the Dumas plot in the Bullard Cemetery.
