One possibility for a father is the Friederich Schmidt who deeds land in Buffalo on 20 March 1846 to our (Joh.) Henry Betz, Sr. [ Index of Deeds, Erie County, NY, p. 703: Henry Betz as the grantor and Frederick Schmidt & Catherine, his wife, as the grantee. The date of record was Mar. 20, 1846 and the date of instrument was Mar. 20, 1846]. And then Henry Betz deeds land to Leonhard Schmidt/Smith and wife Elisabeth in 1851/1852.

In 1851, Leonhard Schmidt names his first son "Philipp Leonhard Schmidt," quite possibly (based on naming conventions) after his father (although the godparent to Philipp Leonhard Schmidt is Philipp Diener or Doerner, Elisabetha's brother-in-law).

There is also a Maria Schmidt who is godparent to his daughter Maria in 1859. Might she be a sister or sister-in-law?
