9 Nov 1923, p 2 - Mahlon Spear, a lifelong resident of this vicinity, passed away October 31, at Braintree, Mass., where he had been spending a few weeks with Rev. and Mrs. Arthur E. Wilson. He had been in poor health for several years, and since April had failed very fast. He was much better for a time after going to Braintree, until he was taken seriously ill about a month ago. His wife, Amelia F. Spear, and two daughters, Miss Helen Spear, and Mrs. Arthur E. Wilson, survive him. Mr. Spear was born on a farm near Phelps, in 1845. When he was eight years old his family moved to Sodus and bought land which he has owned for seventy years. Twenty-nine years ago he purchased a house in Newark and came here to educate his children. For many years he was actively interested in Masonry and was a Knight Templar. He was a progressive and successful farmer. He was an unusually honest and upright citizen, a man of ability and character. In his home he was generous, self-sacrificing and faithful. A finer, more devoted father never lived. "X."
