Facts and Events
Type: aka FAMILY MIGRATION: When the children of Andrew Putman grew to adulthood these men and women found it necessary to move away from the Keedysville-Eakle's Mills area of Washington County, Maryland. When the grandsons became of age the farms could no longer be divided and still remain a farm. A farm has to have enough acreage in order to produce crops and livestock and thereby remain profitable. The first wave of Putmans to leave Maryland occurred at the beginning of the Revolutionary War. Andrew's daughter, Maria Magdalena Putman, who was married to Henry Bruner, and her in-laws were the first to go. Henry's grandfather Ulrich Bruner settled in the newly formed county of Bedford in Pennsylvania around 1772. In 1775 he owned 1,000 acres of land where the city of Somerset, Pennsylvania now stands. The city was originally known as 'Brunnerstown" but when the county of Somerset was erected in 1795, the village was renamed "Somerset." By 1785 most of Maria Magdalena's siblings also moved to this county. Only Amelia & Christian Wyand, and Susanna & Henry Baker stayed in Maryland. References
