Facts and Events
Graduated from Nazareth College in Rochester, New York. Madeline's husband Frank in the early 1930s traveled to St. Paul on a business trip and decided it was a good place to live and start a business in spite of it being the time of the "great depression". He and Madeline opened a women's apparel store bearing his name (Frank Murphy). The store from the beginning catered to the affluent. As a team Madeline and Frank had a flair for retailing and building personal friendships with their customers. The store had a large following and was recognized as a fashion leader in the Twin Cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis. In the mid 1940s Madeline's two sisters Dorothy (Dotes) and Blanche (Buddy) Reynolds also moved to St. Paul from Rochester and began long careers in the store. At age 87 Dotes is still working in the store. Daughter Shannon became associated with the store shortly after leaving college and upon inheriting it after Frank and Madeline's death's in 1972 and 1976 operated it for many years. At the time of this writing the store has been operating 57 years. Frank, Madeline and Shannon were a close family enjoying not only living together but working together as well. They frequently traveled together both for pleasure or for business. For many years they spent long vacations together on Key Biscaynne outside of Miami, Florida. Although he enjoyed golf, fishing and hunting Frank's primary diversion was "playing" the horses, an interest he passed onto Shannon. Madeline and Frank are buried in the Resurrection Cemetery, Mendota Heights, MN.
