Madeline joined the Bowmanstown Vol. Fire Co. Auxiliary in 1967. She was a trustee in 1970, vice-president in 1972, and president in 1974. In March of 1976 she became first active female member of the Bowmanstown Vol. Fire Co. She helped reorganize the Bowmanstown Fire Police. Was captain 1981-82, lieutenant 1982-83, president 1984-91. In October of 1991 the Fire Police gave her an honorary lifetime membership. Died at home.
Madeline married Kermit Wallace Steigerwalt son of Dewey Wilbur Steigerwalt and Lizzie Helena Henry on 2 Feb 1943 in Bowmanstown, Carbon, Pa. Kermit was born on 4 Jan 1920 in Palmerton, Carbon, Pa. He died on 9 Dec 1995 in Palmerton, Carbon, Pa, Palmerton Hosp. He was buried on 14 Dec 1995 in Hometown, Schuylkill, Pa, Skyview Mem Cem.
Kermit died of natural causes while preparing to plow snow for the Borough of Bowmanstown. He was employed by the Raymond Moulthrop Trucking Co., Lehighton, for 30 years before retiring in 1990. For many years, he also worked for the Bowmanstown Borough Maintenance department. In July of 1995 he was given an honorary lifetime membership by the Bowmanstown-Parryville Lions Club for voluntary help given over the years. A member of the Bowmanstown Vol. Fire Co. since 1967, he was a trustee and chief mechanic. August of 1995 he was given the honor of christening the new fire truck. Also at that time the Fire Co. presented him with a trophy for 28 years of service.
