Excerpt from Carrie Manning's Family Essay dated march 5th 1940
"My mother Lydia must inherited some of her mother's courage and business ability.
She used to tell an amazing story of her girlhood. One of the men hired to work on the farm considered her very 'contrary' and said 'If you fell in the Brook, Lydia, I should look for you upstream.' whereupon she replies 'I shouldn't be there, I should go the other way." But her mother certainly commanded the respect of her children who thought a real honor to be able to buy for their mother material for a dress, through their activities of harvesting and selling chestnuts, when they were just little girls.
They attended district school and my mother's great embarrassment was that she had two middle names, and a boy she didn't like also had two middle names. When on the first day of school each child rose and gave the teacher his or her name for enrollment, she was always chagrined to have to say, 'Lydia Freelove Stone Phillips, after this lad said: John Lorenzo Shepardson Moore.
(the gold locket in the plaid jewel box contains the pictures of these four sisters who I am told were called the "pretty Phillips girls'.) "

- I suspect that Lloyd and Lydia were married in Templeton. As Luke, Lloyd's father was deeply religious as Carrie his daughter states in her essay that he was a member of the congregational church and that Lloyd was one of the the only child of Luke to continue on his religious faith.
