Lydia Hazen (Howlet 4, Jacob 3, Thomas 2, Edward 1), born at Norwich, Conn., 22 Oct. 1761, died at Wright Settlement, Rome, N. Y., 28 Apr. 1828 [Gravestone]; married 11 Sept. 1780, Joshua Kirkland, born 7 Apr. 1756, died at Wright Settlement, 23 Mar. 1833, aged 77 [gravestone], son of Daniel Kirkland.
On 19 Apr. 1783, Joshua Kirkland and Lydia his wife conveyed to Capt. Jacob Hazen "all our right in two pieces of land that was set out unto us in the distribution of our Honored Father and Mothers Land in Norwich on the west side of Shetucket River," near land set out to Zerviah Bushnell, Nathan Hazen and Darius Hazen. Joshua Kirkland and his wife "owned the covenant" 7 Jan. 1792, in the First Church, Norwich, and their first four living children were baptized 11 Aug. 1792. They removed from Norwich, apparently 1810-11, certainly before 4 Apr. 1815, when Philip Filer of Rome conveyed to Joshua Kirkland of Rome for the yearly rent of $5.00 a lot on Dominick Street. [Oneida Deeds, 31:47.]
The will of Joshua Kirkland of Rome, dated 29 Aug. 1832, was proved 17 May 1833 on oath of Daniel Butts and Daniel Bushnell. By its terms the sons George and Andrew, who were named executors, received his farm of 170 acres, and Henry and Benjamin each $50, and Lydia, wife of Daniel W. Knight, $100. The executors' petition states that the above named heirs, also the son Joseph Kirkland, and Susanna Kirkland, widow of the testator, were all living in Oneida County, except Benjamin, who resided in Seneca County.
