Grew up on family farm, known as the Silver Brook Dairy Farm, which was the first modern commercial dairy in Michigan. After her marriage, they lived in Detroit at 2332 Inglis Ave. Lulu very active through her life. Belonged to the Masonic Order of the Eastern Star and White Shrine, being a worthy member of Riverside Chapter in Detroit about 1940. In 1966 she moved to Elizabethtown to be near her son James Douglas Hartley and his family. While in Elizabethtown, she was a member of the Memorial United Methodist Church.
