The State of New York did not require that vital records be kept until 1880 and there wasn't widespread compliance until 1890, therefore there are no birth or marriage records for Lucretia. Her info is only captured in census' so far. When she applied for a widow's pension per her husband Joseph Merritt's service in the civil war, she reported their marriage date as 04 Feb 1866, but said their marriage certificate was torn and half of it lost so could not provide proof of the date. Her middle name, Sabin, comes from her paternal grandmother, Lucretia Sabin, wife of Nathan Wakefield and mother of Gilbert Wakefield.
